District News: Letter from Dr. Spence - September 23, 2025

September 23, 2025

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Strong and consistent school attendance is one of the most important factors in a child’s academic success. When students are present and on time each day, they build the foundation for learning, develop essential life skills, and form habits that support their growth long after graduation.

Promoting good attendance takes all of us at UCSD working together:

  • Students are expected to attend every day, arrive on time, and be ready to learn.
  • Parents and guardians play a vital role in ensuring regular attendance and promptly notifying the school when an absence occurs.
  • Teachers and staff are responsible for keeping accurate records and working with families when attendance concerns arise.
  • School leaders are charged with maintaining an effective and supportive attendance system across all buildings.

Each year, public school districts are required to provide families with a summary of their attendance policy in accordance with Commissioner’s Regulations (8 NYCRR 104.1). Enclosed you will find the Utica City School District’s Board-approved Attendance Policy Summary. The full policy (Policy 7006) is available from your building principal or on our district website at:

https://web2.moboces.org/districtpolicies

The Utica City School District is deeply committed to supporting every student’s success. Together, we can help ensure that consistent school attendance opens the doors to achievement and opportunity for all children. Thank you for your partnership.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christopher Spence
Superintendent of Schools
